Weather Inspired Learning!

Yesterday I posted a little bit about the weather and how the kids thought it would be a good idea to be at home since it was so dark outside. We ended up doing a little shared writing at the end of the day. Shared writing in this experience is when the kids do the thinking and I do the writing. Here is what we came up with as a class together:

Today is rainy. It is dark. It is cloudy. It is cold. Plants are dying. Today is windy. It is not sunny. I do not like the rain. I do not like the wind. Today mushrooms are growing outside. It makes me feel cold. The weather makes me sad. I wish we would play at recess. I want to go home and color or play in side or watch TV until the weather changes. I wish I could go on a bike ride. I don't like this weather. We might have a storm. We can read a book.

Wow! 17 sentences on one topic. My purpose of an activity like this is to show the kids how to write many sentences about one topic. It is also nice to model the writing for them (capitals and periods and complete sentences in this case). Having the students come up with the ideas for writing makes it a fun shared experience!

Today, the kids came in and noticed that the weather was different than yesterday! We had some nice compare/contrast conversations. We have been working on predicting what will come next in a story- so we moved that idea right over to writing and science and predicted what might come next tomorrow with the weather. This created good conversations in class and worked on our English language development standards looking at writing and speaking in past, present and future tense.

Yesterday the weather was...
Today the weather is...
Tomorrow the weather might be...

This assignment will be coming home later in the week and you can see the work your student did today around this idea. If you need an idea for journal writing homework tonight you could always write about the weather.

Happy Fall,
